A surprising spectacle waits for every summer to you in Samaná Bay: One of the excursions more beautiful than exists in Dominican Republic is the visit to the Sanctuary of the Hunchbacked Whales in the Bay of Samaná, located in the Northwest of the country. Where Every year, between the months of December and April, 3.000 Hunchbacked whales come from the seas from Iceland, Greenland, Canada, and North America to reproduce in our warm waters in the coasts of the Atlantic Ocean. The spectacle is impressive, when the males of 40 tons jump on the water and if the male does not gain reactions of any female tries to attract them with a long and monotonous song that the whales can hear until a distance of 30 kilometers. After giving to light their small ones, the whales prepare their return until the north. From 1986 " Bank of Plata" , Samaná, has become a sanctuary for the protection of the whales.
